BYD Japan officially launches medium-sized electric bus J7 to help electrify public transport in Japan

On 14th November, BYD Japan officially announced the launch of the J7, a mid-sized electric bus for the Japanese market, which will be available for booking from 1st January 2024, with delivery scheduled for autumn 2025, and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

The new medium-sized electric bus J7, with a capacity of 61 passengers, is powered by BYD's independently developed lithium iron phosphate blade battery, which has a range of up to 250km on a single charge and ensures a high level of safety while expanding the available space inside the vehicle through a fully flat floor and achieving a high driving range.

Japan is currently in a critical period of public transport electrification transition, and there is a large demand for a wide range of models and efficient charging methods. 2015, BYD Japan introduced five K9 electric buses in Kyoto, achieving a breakthrough for a Chinese company in Japan, a strong traditional automotive country. After that, BYD has been actively cultivating the Japanese market and expanding its model matrix, providing the J6, a small electric bus that is most suitable for community buses, and the K8, a 10.5m large electric bus that is most suitable for Japan's specialised buses, covering a full range of large, medium and small-sized models. BYD is also constantly upgrading its product technology to quickly adapt to Japan's fast charging standard CHAdeMO, and has been conducting experiments and signing relevant agreements with a number of Japanese charger manufacturers in order to improve charging efficiency and better meet customers' needs.

Currently, BYD has occupied more than 70% of the electric bus market in Japan, and plans to achieve a cumulative sales volume of 4,000 buses in Japan by 2030, which will further assist the transformation of public transport in Japan, and actively respond to the global carbon peak and carbon neutrality goals.
